Since Dr. Dan was sponsored by the Health Science Center, President Boren thought it would be a good idea if he were a doctor with a lab coat and scrubs. The Rolex and Mount Blanc pen were Dan Kiacz's ideas to add a little humor. President Boren wanted him named after Dan because Dan died on April 9th 2004, before we were able to

complete the buffalo. (In case you do not know Dan he was a professor of printmaking at OU for 31 years.) So Dr Dan is meant to be a humorous image of a very successful doctor.

Spirit of the Buffalo originated as a public art project combining art, commerce and civic pride in Oklahoma featuring Oklahoma artists. Initial proceeds benefited the Nature Conservancy's work in Oklahoma. The website project continues through private funds.
