Description

"Picasso
Buffalo" is based on Picasso's
1945 "Bull Series" lithographs
which through cubism progressively
reduce the form to lines and planes.
The fiberglass form was smoothed out
and transformed by the use of earth
tones, black and white enamel paints
giving the buffalo a "natural"
effect. This was juxtaposed with the
non-naturalistic treatment of cubism
by slashing into the form with simplified
planes of color and line.

The analogy between buffalo and bull/art
and spirit/power and reduction all
play a part in the concept as well
as a humorous take on modernism.
