Artist's Description

The story of Roughneck is as follows. Mike wanted his buffalo to be patriotic. The buffalo would have 13 stripes just like the flag, and the front part of the animal would be a field of blue with 50 stars. The folks at Devon loved the idea and asked Mike to design the buffalo in such a way that employees could participate. In the way of all good art, things just started happening. Getting the employees at Devon to assist with the project turned into 48 employee hand prints becoming the stars of the

flag (Mike and I were the first two handprint stars). The employees were chosen from a drawing and they spent a week coming via company buses to imprint their hands. Devon also had the buffalo named via employee suggestions and an election. Martha Larsen

Spirit of the Buffalo originated as a public art project combining art, commerce and civic pride in Oklahoma featuring Oklahoma artists. Initial proceeds benefited the Nature Conservancy's work in Oklahoma. The website project continues through private funds.
