Artist's Description

Spencer Mental Health Facility asked us to come up with an idea that would allow the children from their Facility to participate in painting the buffalo. We decided to paint the buffalo with wide purple, and white stripes with narrow borders of green (purple and green are the colors for Integris Health). We then masked everything off except the white stripes and took the buffalo to the facility and let the children, in small groups, splatter paint the buffalo to their hearts content!

No one anticipated the extent of the mess this would make. However, everyone had so much fun

that no one minded! Hair, clothes, faces, you name it, it was covered with paint! Including Rick and I! It was heart warming to see children who have had such troubled lives, forget it all and just be kids.

The facility held a competition to come up with the name of their buffalo. So the name Spirit was selected by the children themselves. It seems to describe the children perfectly.

Spirit of the Buffalo originated as a public art project combining art, commerce and civic pride in Oklahoma featuring Oklahoma artists. Initial proceeds benefited the Nature Conservancy's work in Oklahoma. The website project continues through private funds.
